I have placed the picture in question with Moore, Allen and Innocent auctioneers in Cirencester. The picture will come up for sale in October.
It measures about 30 inches X 36 inches, oil on board, signed, it is well framed and in very nice condition. It is of a highly evocative Tresham hillside at dusk and in the foreground a shepherd tends his flock.
Hartrick painted a lot of local people and views around the village in his 10 year residency from 1908. In his book he details a lot about life in the village at that time — he clearly loved the place. The book also describes his life in Paris (where he knew and painted Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Toulouse Lautrec), Scotland — where he painted with the Glasgow Boys and also his life as a journalist illustrator with various London newspapers at the turn of the century. It is a fascinating read.
I am sure that the picture in question can be looked at as the auctioneers on request by interested parties. It would somehow be fitting if this picture “returned home” as it were.
Painting by A S Hartrick for Sale
This gentleman has written to me (see his letter below) in case any Tresham resident is interested in purchasing a painting by A S Hartrick (who painted the reredos in the church) which he is putting up for auction in Cirencester (I am not sure which auction house but will post this information as a Comment if and when I find out).
I have been an admirer of AS Hartrick for many years — I used to live close to his niece in Rhu, Scotland. She talked about him a lot and had a number of his pictures. I have a copy of his well-known minor classic book “A Painters Pilgrimage Through 50 years” (Cambridge University press). He was awarded the OBE a week prior to his death in London.
In his book he devotes quite a bit of space to his time as a resident of Tresham where he painted local views and local people. He obviously loved the place. I have a painting by him of a snowy landscape at dusk with a shepherd looking after a lamb. It is almost certainly a Tresham hillside I would say — the shepherd in question appears singly in other pictures that are marked as being from there.
I am about to sell it at the auctioneers in Cirencester. I am merely drawing your attention to this should somebody in the village be interested in purchasing it – it is of a good size and well framed. I know that he painted the reredos in the church (he describes it in his book).
This is really just your interest.
