Tresham’s Harvest Festival Service -Sunday October 6th 2019
Dear Everyone,
Harvest Festival has a special significance if you live in an agricultural area, and we certainly do. This year, we have seen the harvest take place on Tom’s farm, and as I write, the Kingstons’ maize harvest will soon take place. It is the first time we have had maize growing here as far as I know – a sign of not only climate change but also the breeding of more resilient varieties since I was young when there was no maize grown in England. This is the high spot in the year’s rhythm of sowing and growing and reaping.
We shall celebrate in church at 11 am, with garden and farm produce as usual. Although this is a service, it is also an opportunity for all residents to join in gratitude for the food we eat, and for the work of farmers and horticulturists everywhere. We do hope that as many people as possible will be there, whatever their views on church services, as our community’s opportunity to celebrate together the light and warmth and rain and sheer hard work which makes us all able to be well fed all the year round. There is a social and community side to enjoy in the life of a church, and everyone is extremely welcome to come, and to enjoy the chat among the flapjacks afterwards.
If you would like to donate non-perishable food, it will be taken to the food bank. There will also be a separate collection for those who would like to provide money for the food bank so items which are needed but not normally donated can be purchased.
We hope to see you there. With very best wishes,
Sue
